The shape of the diagramless crossword can be determined solely by the numberings and enumerations of the clues:
The 5 (symmetrically placed) "No!! Play" Across clues (i.e. 16A, 24A, 30A, 37A and 48A) have enumerations that allow the phrase ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY to be entered, and the enumerations provided in square brackets in each of these clues all indicate A, B and O squares. This, plus the flavor text references to A+ and B- provides a reference to the final answer that is similarly clued by the (symmetrically placed) "All work and no, Play" Down clues (i.e. 10D and 39D): BLOOD CELLS.
